What’s the Deal with the Salmon Hat?

That isn’t just a silly fashion idea we had in order to combine two famous local animals into one tile.

Orcas wearing "salmon hats" is a Orcan cultural trend where orcas in the Pacific Northwest balance dead salmon on their heads for a short period. This was first observed in the late 1980s - and more recently in 2024 (they must’ve heard about being immortalized in one of our tiles).

While scientists are baffled by the behavior, it is thought to be a form of play or communication, possibly related to the large chum salmon runs. Or maybe to save some snacks for later, or for a pal. The trend from the 1980s was short-lived, and current observations suggest these are isolated incidents, not a widespread cultural fad.

I don’t know though. I think it will spread. So stylish. Soon all the sea life will be wearing hats made from their friends.
